Samurai Champloo TV Review

Another show by Shinichirô Watanabe, this is the follow up to one of my favorite Animes of all time Cowboy Bebop. This takes a completely different approach, going for a older samurai setting with Hip-Hop music instead of Jazz.

In the story we follow three characters Fuu, Mugen & Jin who all meet together after Mugen and Jin cause trouble trying to fight each other in a tea shop. After destroying the tea shop the two get captured and are sentenced to death, but Fuu saves them and in return wants them to be her guards to find a man who smells of sunflowers. The journey starts there as they travel across the land getting in different situations while looking for mysterious person.

I really liked the animation style of the show, it feels different to your typical anime style but because its so exaggerated it works. This really helps with the fight scenes in the show which has a lot because it makes them very intense to watch.

The one thing I do have a problem with the series is the overall plot of the series, yes its very point A to point B which works but i think it was the lack of character arc throughout the show. There is character development while we get to know the backstory of all the characters, but for the most part they are fairly the same till the end.

Now to talk about the Music, I noticed that unlike his other shows, Watanabe actually incorporated the music used to the way the show is edited. If you know about djing Hip-Hop than you know that scratching is used a lot in mixing it. So when ever a scene is to transition or to cut back and forth like a DJ there is always a scratch effect which adds to the style of the show. Its cool when its first used but I like that they never overused it to where it can take me out of the show.

Samurai Champloo is a fun experience, I loved the world and the characters and it has a very satisfying conclusion to a good story. The show is currently on Netflix and is definitely worth watching if your looks for a show to watch.
