Psycho Pass: The Movie (2015) Movie Review

I can't help but feel that season 2 of Psycho Pass did so much damage to the show that I had a hard time getting into this movie. Which is a bit weird because this had the production team behind season 1 yet at the same time continue on the story as if season 2 even excised at all? Its hard to tell but here we are with a short adventure.

Psycho Pass The Movie is very much an anime film based off of a show as it doesn't do anything that could be considered risky or with high stakes. As well as keep every character the exact same way they are from the start of the film to the end, with no growth or change and no major events to impact them further. The majority focuses on Akane as she tries to solve the mystery of terrorists that invaded Japan. Leading up to her having to find Kogami and find out if he is a threat, but of course there is always more to the story than meets the eye.

I think the addition of Kogami really help make this movie much more interesting, do they use him to his full potential? Not really. Nor do they expand on his character or have had him go through something that could change him. He does talk about events about surviving outside of Japan but nothing enough for him to change who he is. I was kind of hoping for him to become similar to Sasuke from Naruto as he left the village and began living in the world and developed a different perspective.

I really like the idea of having a movie be a bridge or set up for another season of a show and that could've been the case for this show, but ultimately it doesn't do anything different or have enough of an impact to warrant anything like that. I do think that keeping Kogami outside and away from Akane does really make her character less interesting and I wish they had written a way for him to return as an enforcer just so he could return again.

Psycho Pass: The Movie is a fine movie and it worth checking out if you have seen the series. I just would recommend this as a rental as I don't really see much appeal of the movie after one viewing. I do find this world interesting and would hope they continue to explore it in the future.

Psycho Pass 2 TV Review

Psycho Pass has been an interesting series, taking elements from shows like Ghost in the Shell and other futuristic settings and doing something fairly original.

While the first was enjoyable and very solid as a contained story, season 2 is quite the opposite of that.

We return to following the BSP but this time things have changed up since the first season. We now have new character, most who don't really get any time to become characters. As well as returning characters, some who are different now because of the events of season 1 but don't get any focus on them to make a difference.

The villain in this season does have motivation, but it isn't even clear until the last episode of the season. Everything before that is different situations and scenarios that prove the system they live in is flaw, which season 1 had. Here it again lacks any sort of intelligence and meaning. While the situations themselves are just as intense and nerve wracking as you would expect, they all end up leading making the BSP look just stupid.

In the first season they didn't exactly succeed at every situation but each situation was something new and different that they haven't had gone through at that point. But here they have been through those situations so it would make sense if they reacted like it.

You can definitely feel the absence of Kogami in this season, especially because no other character stands up to do the things that everyone is afraid to do.

Season 2 lacks character development and energy that season 1 had, and learning about how this was essentially filler for a movie they were working on during this season makes it even more disappointing.

Psycho-Pass TV Review

Psycho Pass is a dark crime drama in a futuristic setting. It does bare resemblance to things like Ghost in The Shell and Minority Report but only in small elements. There is enough style and rules on the world to make it stand on its own.

There is a large cast of characters but really only three become important or even have character. A lot of them you have seen from things making them pretty predictable. You do get some back story on some, but only just enough for you to get interested in them but nothing to the point that the story focused on.

Where the show really shines is the overall story and situations from the moment. The way the show is paced really gets you into the moment. You want to see how the characters we follow get out of the situation they are in or see how they follow up on the cases they are investigating. Its a really interesting world they set up but the story is taken over so much that there really isn't' focus at all on the world nor the people that live in it.

I really like how the villain's motives are based on countering and questioning the system set in place. To me that is when things actually became interesting, not so much in the actually show but just in the idea of a villain taking on something that the characters we follow believe in. But it does lead to a problem with the show in general is that no one really questions the system they live in even when the villain makes a lot of sense. It even leads to the main characters finding out secrets about the Psycho Pass system and who is controlling it, but it doesn't affect anything.

They do talk about how it could lead to chaos in the city but there really isn't anything to back it up. Again something that would've been really interesting to get into but wasn't focused on for the sake of the plot.

Overall, Psycho Pass is a enjoyable show but lacks having something of real substance. Which is disappointing and a missed opportunity. It doesn't mean that the show is bad because it really isn't and has a lot of enjoyable things about it and new ideas that I would like to followed through in other shows or maybe another series from this world.

Anime I'm Watching #1 (May 2015)

I am always looking for new shows to watch and lately I've happen to stumble upon a couple of shows I'm surprised I missed. I made a list of these shows that I am currently checking out and will most likely be doing a review of when I finish watching them.Let me know in the comments if you have seen these shows as well as recommend me some other shows I should check out.

Space Dandy

Space Dandy is easily the most fun show I've seen in a long time. I like how each episode is stand alone and doesn't really connect to anything. This really gives the creators the ability to do anything they want in each episode. There are a lot of elements you can see was brought over from Cowboy Bebop but its very loosely and mostly little things that you might recognize. I'm only about 10 episode in and can't wait to see what crazy adventure they go on next.

Psycho Pass

The first impression from this show is that its very dark. It reminds me a lot of Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, but unlike that show, this one is a bit more engaging plot wise. I like how the main villain of the show is something that goes against the rules that this world has set up really challenging them. The cast is quite big but the two leads really stand out and are the most interesting. There are a bit of a few twists in turns so far and I am becoming more and more interested in seeing where this show goes.

Naruto (125 -140)

I am currently re watching the whole first series of Naruto and I just got to the point where we get one of the biggest fights in the series, Naruto vs Sasuke. What really stood out re watching this was how much it takes to finally get to the fight. There are so many flashbacks and exposition that it gets a tad bit tedious to get through. But they make up for it in the fight scenes. I really enjoy when they improve the animation whenever they have their hand to hand combat.
