The Hateful Eight (2015) Movie Review

Quentin Tarantino

Stars: Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, Channing Tatum, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern

Plot: In post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunters try to find shelter during a blizzard but get involved in a plot of betrayal and deception. Will they survive?

This is the latest film from Quentin Tarantino and is a western set to emulate the style of old westerns in the 50s, 60s, and even 70s.

The film follows a couple of bounty hunters, who have to stay in a shelter house while a blizzard is passing by, when in this house others are staying there as well so begins the paranoia of not trusting anyone while they all have to stay in one room until the blizzard leaves.

The cinematography is fantastic! They shot the film on 70mm which makes every much wider and what I would call, epic. The fact that this format is becoming less and less used is a shame because this shows, that just because a technique is old, doesn't mean it is at all useless. Its really nice to see a director like Tarantino making less popular styles and genres feel new again.

I feel like this goes back to Tarantino's earlier work and feel but in a different way. Specifically Reservoir Dogs, where for the most part we are in a single room with only a number of characters interacting at a time. The story is made interesting through the dialogue and interactions of the characters. This is how it emulates the play and theater type of style that really helps make this movie stay interesting.

The movie feels like a stage play put into a movie, with a simple premise, a simple location, and simple plot. Sometimes being simple is the best thing you can do for a film. The way the story is told and presented is what makes it special or unique and the same applies here. The dialogue was great, I actually found myself laughing during this film than I have from other Tarantino films.

I can see many people enjoying this movie, from the great interactions of the characters, to the great plot, and the fun experience. Its a return to a great genre and a return to old style film making that needs to make a comeback
