Concussion (2015) Movie Review

PG-13  |

Genre: Drama, Sport

Director & Writer: Peter Landesman

Stars: Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Albert Brooks, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, & David Morse

Plot: In Pittsburgh, accomplished pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu uncovers the truth about brain damage in football players who suffer repeated concussions in the course of normal play.

Concussion follows Dr. Bennet Omalu, played by Will Smith, who tries to take on the NFL after discovering that most of the players that die from NFL all had common head traumas to the brain. So Dr. Omalu tries to shine some light on the problem but the NFL try their best to make sure that the story isn't leaked.

I will admit one of the things that bothered me though out this movie was Will Smiths accent in the film. I understand that the actual person had this accent but seeing Will Smith try to emulate the same accent just came off as distracting if nothing else. It could have to do with how famous he is and that we've seen him in so many movies before that we know that isn't his voice.

The weakest part of this film is the script, I noticed that throughout the movie there would be ideas presented to make a point but they would be brought up at a random moment with no real follow through. It starts out strong but goes downhill as the movie progresses. If the film was more consistent it could've turned into something special but unfortunately it will not.
