Before We Go is Chris Evans directorial debut and as a first debut it wasn't that bad of a film. It follow Chris Evans character who is a trumpet player in a station who helps out a women who's bag was stolen, he trys to help her find it but as they search for it they begin to learn new things about each other.
I did enjoy how it was small and wasn't trying to go big for being in New York, most of the scenes in this movie are just small situations the two main characters go through. For taking place at night you never know what time is giving it a feel that night never goes away, which goes with the theme of the film.
The problem I had with the film was that because this is a romance film, it does fall into the typical cliches you see from all kinds of romantic films. You can mostly tell this from the dialogue and the way the two main characters talk to each other. You can tell that the biggest inspiration for this film was Before Sunrise, but the one thing I noticed what that movie had unlike this one was more natural dialogue that felt real.
The cinematography was a bit of a mix bag for me. Almost every shot had a blurry background which is common with most digital camera's these days, it fine for style depending on what you are doing, but the problem here was that it was used constantly for the whole duration of the movie. This removes the sense of space you have making everything more claustrophobic and in a setting like New York you kinda would want to show off the city especially at night.
Before We Go is a nice debut of a film, but I think its biggest problem is that it feels like a debut, which can turn some people off and not enjoy the film. If you can check this out try it on a VOD service and you will enjoy it nicely at home.
