Avengers: Age of Ultron is the latest Marvel movie as well the sequel of the first Avengers movie that we have been waiting for.
What really stood out the most in this movie was the character depth that we got out of the majority of characters as well as some extra depth to Hawkeye which was unexpected. There is also a few moments in the film where we really get to see what some of the heroes, like Tony Stark and Black Widow, the ones that stood out, are afraid of as well as some back story to them. This was probably the most interesting part of the movie.
But on the opposite end the new characters (Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, The Vision) they bring into the movie don't get much back story or even introduction at all. It doesn't help that they don't talk much throughout the movie. This leaves them to be mostly forgettable or just not that interesting, which is disappointing because from the way it seems these are going to be the new replacing heroes for the Avengers going forward.
Ultron as a villain is definitely the most tough bad guy any of the heroes have had to face. It seems like the complaints the most people had about Marvel movies and the villains being pretty weak were addressed. But it was addressed almost as a trade off sacrificing the character to create a better villain. The first film was different where you had Loki who, not so much a great villain, was a great character that you enjoyed on screen regardless.
What does make this movie more enjoyable than the first Avengers is the humor, mostly in the first half of the film. The humor really makes the movie more light than serious and does help balance the more serious moments later in the movie. It the interaction between the characters the really stands out from any of the other marvel movies and one thing that makes me look forward to the Avengers than the other stand alone movies.
Now it wouldn't be a Marvel film if it weren't for the set up for future films. Its in here and its pretty unnecessary, the most obvious set up is for the Black Panther film that will come out in the next few years. But they end up taking the entire Avengers to get to the location of the hero and stop Ultron from getting material used for the climax of the film. It just didn't feel needed and looking back it almost felt kind pointless in the movie.
Of course its not a summer movie without a lot of action, and there is a lot in here, but as more and more of the action went on the more I began to feel numb from it. Not as bad as a Transformers movie but it was approaching it. I think is just because of all the CGI used in this film it really begins to blend all together, and it doesn't help that it wasn't' all that good in certain moments that it became noticeable. This isn't so much a complaint on the movie as to just about all the modern summer movies now and days.
Overall Age of Utron just isn't as strong as its predecessor which is kinda disappointing because Avengers is supposed to be the big climax of the Phase of Marvel movies. But when the big climax of the sequel feels almost exactly the same as the previous it does come off as a bit of repeatable. Not to say that this film was nothing but disappointing wouldn't be true. It does make up a lot with the character depth and the humor in the film that really makes this a much more enjoyable movie.
