Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) Movie Review

R  |  100 min

Director & Writer: Wes Anderson
Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, Willem Dafoe
Genre: Comedy

Plot: The adventures of Gustave H, a legendary concierge at a famous hotel from the fictional Republic of Zubrowka between the first and second World Wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is the lastest film by Wes Anderson, and follows the story of  M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes) through the eyes of his new lobby boy at the hotel he manages at. Mystery when the owner of the hotel dies and leaves the major of her thing to him, he is framed by the other family members so they can get the will changed and take over everything, including the hotel.

If  there is anything that makes this movie stand out from just about any other film is the style. There are definitely the visuals you'd expect from an Wes Anderson film, but the way the story is told visually is even different for him. For every time period, there is a an aspect ratio. It mostly to represent what films in those periods were shot like, which is something that no other filmmaker has really done before. That alone I can appreciate from this film and also why its so creative and can hopefully influences others.

Now the narrative to Grand Budapest Hotel is not what I would've expected from the movie, but finds a way to make it cleaver and overall fun. Its easy to follow, and does have nice pacing to keep me enjoying the ride. But for some reason I wish the movie would've benefit for aiming for a lowing rating like a PG or PG-13. a lot of the things that make it R don't really need to be there, and having a lower rating would've made more sense with the plot and character they created.

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a Solid movie, Great Visuals including a simple narrative does make this movie a good time overall. Somethings I would've like to see are more of what I thought would've benefited the movie, but I appreciate that a Director like Wes Anderson actually goes out of his way to make a movie like this at all. That why I its a film worth checking out if you can and I'm pretty sure you will enjoy it.
