Boku dake ga Inai Machi (Erased) Episode 1 TV Review

Episode: Flashing Before My Eyes

This is a new show from the winter anime season and has already seemed to get a bit of popularity. I went into this show not knowing anything about it other than it has a psychological dark tone to it.

We follow Satoru Fujinuma, who at the opening of the show, is just a delivery guy. But on his way to his next drop off we find out he has some sort of power that lets him be aware of events happens within minutes of their execution.

The first even we see is just a truck driver who falls asleep behind the wheel. Satoru turns his bike around and chases after the truck to try and stop it before hitting a child crossing the road. Luckily he turns the truck enough to not hit the child, but as a result he gets hit by a car.

The damage isn't fatal luckily as he is out pretty quickly and goes to stay with his mother, Sachiko. This is where the show goes a different direction focusing on the dynamic of the mother and son. We follow them go shopping, but outside of the shopping store, he gets the sense again but doesn't know where it is coming from. This time Sachiko notices a child possibly be abducted but the capture lets the child go and drives off, but before he gets far enough, she takes a photo of the license plate.

The end result of her actions which leads into the end of the episode is that Satoru's mother is killed by a mysterious man. Who then proceeds to take her phones to do what I assume as destroy the evidence.

On Satoru's way home from work he sees this mysterious man but when he turns to look at him again, he is no where to be found. This leads to him discovering his mother's body and at the same time be caught by a neighbor who screams for some reason. Within seconds the police show up and when Satoru runs into the police, his first instinct is to run away from them even though he knows he is clearly innocent.

The is where the first episode ends. Its interesting and has potential but the ending did kinda put me off a little. Mostly because the way he handled that situation didn't make any sense at all? He knew he was innocent and yet he asks guilty in from of everyone. It just didn't feel natural. I hope that this shows goes to somewhere interesting, I guess we will have to wait and see.
