The Hobbit: Battle of The Five Armies (2014) Movie Review
PG-13 | 144 min
Genre: Adventure | Fantasy
Director: Peter Jackson
Writer: Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson, & Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Martin Freeman, Luke Evans, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Orlando Bloom, and Ian McKellen
Plot: Bilbo and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the terrifying Smaug from acquiring a kingdom of treasure and obliterating all of Middle-Earth.
The Hobbit Trilogy hasn't been the best trilogy out there, and I've even seen some comparisons to the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Obviously its not as bad as those but it definitely has problems. I was very much looking forward to the first movie, back when I though it was only going to be two movies, and I was pretty disappointed, its wasn't bad, but the first movie felt like it was dragging things along and taking its time, and focusing on unnecessary things.
Then they announced that they were splitting the movie into three films, which didn't make much since due to the fact that The Hobbit is only one book, that is no where near as along as The Lord of The Rings. The Hobbit is a small story and focuses on the main character Bilbo Baggins. So far Peter Jackson's Trilogy is the complete opposite to be honest. The title character of these movie is not the focus at all, and the split of the movies has had a lot of effect on how the movies feel.
The one positive thing about this, is that because so much is filmed, including the extended editions, someone could possibly make a fan edit that would turn these movie into one. It wouldn't be for a while though, but it would be interesting to see.
Now for The Battle of The Five Armies, its the final conclusion to this trilogy and possibly for Middle Earth completely. It picks up right after the last movie and closes up that storyline surprisingly quickly. After that they movie becomes something different and changes its focus. If you were bored with the first two movie because of all the focus on the quest, than you might like this one. Unlike the first two this one focuses all the battles and the war going on between all the factions.
It feels like with this movie the wanted to streamline it for even more audiences by just making it all battle, there really isn't much of the small little journey left in this. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets the most mixed reviews because this movie is ultimately so different from the source material that is bound to happen. What the movie does do right is connecting it to The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, you could potentially watch it right after this one.
The Battle of The Five Armies is definitely the most entertaining out of The Hobbit trilogy but it also lacks the least amount of substance out of the movie. If you are a fan The Hobbits Movie so far, than its worth checking out in theaters, but if you just a regular movie goer, you can just wait till you can rent it.

It feels like a prequel to the lord of the rings than a hobbit movie
