The Magnificent Seven (2016) Movie Review

The Magnificent Seven stars a large cast from Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D'Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, and Haley Bennett.

The movie follow seven people as they band together to help this small town taken over by the villain of the film played by Peter Sarsgaard. In case you can't tell the movie very much feels like a modern superhero flick with heroes having to team up to take down an over the top villain. This type of story has been told over and over but what makes this movie so connected to comic book movies of today is the characters and how the movie lets you know how indestructible they are.

So much has already been done with the the western genre and this movie knows it. It knows exactly what it is and just does it from the best examples it has. Its very entertaining for what it is but I was surprise at how well shot the actions was and how over the top they made it. The shoot outs are great, something that can only really be done in westerns. The plot has been done over and over again but this movie knows that and doesn't try to be anything different.

This is a movie that appeals to the mass audiences who haven't seen many westerns. For them I think they will enjoy this movie much more as this movie is targeted to them. I just don't see anyone who has seen western movies and knows the tropes and style to distinguish this movie from any of the others like it. I think this is a movie best watched at a matinée price or waiting until it hits home release.
